There are a lot of people who like animals. And many of them keep some animals at home. Such animals are called pets. They are cats, dogs, hamsters, white mice and so on. They know their masters and love them. And all the pets need their master’s care and love. Dogs can be good friends to lonely people, cats can cure some illnesses and bad mood. But in general it is a cat that walks by herself.

We have four rooms in our house. But my favourite one is our study which is the biggest room. It is full of wonderful things: books, pictures, collections of coins, a video and computer.

There is a very old writing table in the study. My great granddad bought it in the beginning of the century when he was a student. It is very old, solid and comfortable. There is a sofa in the corner of the room and next to it a beautiful old standard lamp, which is on the carpet.

I clean the carpet with the vacuum cleaner very often. There is a piano near the window.

At night when it gets dark I like to turn off the light, turn on the standard lamp and play the piano. When the standard lamp is on, the study looks like a fairy- land. I often sit in the old armchair and dream of pleasant things. I love this room very much. But my brother likes our living-room. He has got a very good stereo system there. He plays his music very loudly in this room. This room is not very comfortable. There is a fireplace in it, but nevertheless it’s a little cold in winter. There is also an armchair, a sofa and some shelves with compact discs and cassettes in them. My brother spends much time in this room.

Когда включенный торшер, рабочий кабинет выглядит как сказочная страна. Я часто сижу в старом кресле и мечту о приятных вещах. Я очень люблю эту комнату. Но мой брат любит нашу гостиную. У него там очень красивая стереосистема. Он включает музыку в этой комнате очень громко. Эта комната не очень удобная. В ней есть камин, но, несмотря на это, зимой там прохладно. Там есть также кресло, диван и полки с компакт-дисками и кассетами в них. Мой брат проводит много времени в этой комнате.

There are moments in every person’s life when he wants to travel. Everyone understands travelling in his own way. Some people consider trips to new towns and countries offered by different tourist firms to be the best way to travel. These package tours are for the laziest. The others prefer walking tours and tourism. There is nothing more beautiful for them than walking in some pinewood, or rowing down the river in a boat, or even riding a bicycle and enjoying the landscape. There are also people who are fond of mountain climbing. The most unforgettable feeling for them is the one you have at the peak of the mountain. And the view, which opens from it, is just magnificent. The sea has also attracted mankind as one of the powers of nature. That is why sea tours are very popular among people. They offer a great possibility to enjoy the sight of the sea in different seasons and weather, and also to open some new towns and countries for oneself. For some people travelling is associated with visiting ancient cities. There one can see ancient palaces, cathedrals and fortresses, visit different museums and follow the flow of time. There also exists a very interesting and cheap kind of travelling — hitchhiking.

В жизни каждого человека есть моменты, когда ему хочется путешествовать. Каждый понимает путешествие по-своему. Некоторые люди считают, что лучший вид путешествия — это поездки в новые города и страны, которые предлагают разные туристические фирмы. Другим нравятся пешие путешествия и туризм. Для них нет ничего лучшего, чем по сосновым лесам или проплыть в лодке по реке, или даже прокатиться на велосипеде, наслаждаясь природой. Также есть люди, которым нравится альпинизм.

Для них наиболее незабываемое чувство — это то, что они ощущают на вершине. А вид, который приоткрывается из нее, просто прекрасный. Море всегда привлекало человечество как одна со стихий природы. Именно поэтому морские путешествия очень популярные. Они предоставляют прекрасную возможность натешиться морем в разные поры года и при любой погоде, а также открыть для себя новые города и страны.

Для некоторых людей путешествие связано с посещением старинных городов. Там можно увидеть давние дворцы, соборы и крепости, посетить разные музеи и проследить ход времени. Существует также очень интересный и дешевый вид путешествий — автостопом.

It is very popular among young people. And it is not surprising — one can get a real adventure full of romantics. And there are also people who like exotic kinds of travelling, like travelling on a balloon. But only bold people can risk and surrender themselves wholly to the will of the wind. Speaking about different types of travelling, one should say that any of them is a good method of having a rest and spending some new unusual life.

Until the mid — 1970s, the February 22, the birthday of George Washington, the hero of the Revolutionary War and the first president of the United States, was a national holiday. In addition, the February 12, the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the president during the Civil War, was a holiday in most states. The two days have been joined, and the holiday has been expanded to embrace all former presidents. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February. Veterans Day is originally called Armistice Day. This holiday was established to honour Americans who had died in World War I. It falls on November 11, the day when that war ended in 1918, but it now honours veterans of all wars in which the United States has fought Veterans’ organizations hold parades, and the president customarily places a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River in Washington, D. C.

Mother’s Day comes on the second Sunday in May. It is a day when Americans honour their mothers. It is not a national holiday. Mother’s Day is an American national observance in honour of motherhood. The holiday, suggested by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, was set (1914) by an act of Congress for annual celebration. It is also observed in England and Germany. In 1907, the day was celebrated in a church in Philadelphia, Pensylvania. A member of that church planned the Sunday morning service to honour her own mother. More and more churches in cities and states set aside the day to honour mothers.Since 1914, the whole country has observed Mother’s day. Most mothers like to celebrate the day with family reunions.

Father’s Day comes on the third Sunday in June. It is not a national holiday on that day. Americans honour their fathers. Many people send their fathers a card or a gift. Celebrated on the fourth Monday of May, Memorial Day honours the dead. Although it originated in the aftermath of the Civil War, it has become a day on which the dead of all wars, and the dead generally, are remembered in special programs held in cemeteries, churches, and other public meeting places.
