“Tronka”, “Ziklon”, “Tvoya Zorya” — all these are the novels about the difficult fate of a person in the modern world, about his place among other people, about his moral choice. The most famous novel “Sobor” is also about it. This novel was unknown to the reader for a long period of time, it was banned. Some philosophical, moral, historic and ecological problems are considered in it, in particular, the problem of the historic memory of the nation. “Sobor” became the symbol of existance of spiritual bounds between the generations.

This novel left no one indifferent. Unfortunately, this marvellous novel became the last written by the writer. This outstanding man died not long ago, and this event hurt every person.

Oles Honchar is my favourite writer and I always liked his books because of their beautiful language, meaningful plots and unusual fates of the characters.

В известнейшем романе «Собор» также говорится об этом. На протяжении длительного времени этот роман был неизвестный читателю, он был запрещен. В нем рассматриваются философские, моральные, исторические и экологические проблемы, в частности, проблема исторической памяти наций. «Собор» стал символом существования духовных связей между поколениями. Этот роман не оставил никого равнодушным. К сожалению, этот чудесный роман стал последним, написанным писателем. Недавно этот выдающийся человек умерший, и это событие печалью откликнулась в каждом думающем человеке.

Олесь Гончар — мой любимый писатель, я всегда любил его книги за красивый язык, содержательные сюжеты и необыкновенные судьбы героев.

In the history of humanity there have always been people whose actions and ideas produced a great impact on the lives of other people. They have made a great contribution to the science, culture, social life of this country. That’s why they are called outstanding. The names of Taras Shevchenko, Lessya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Marko Vovchok and Hrygoriy Skovoroda won universal recognition. There’s hardly a country in the world which doesn’t have Taras Shevchenko’s poems translated into its language. Gentle melodies and deep emotions of Lessya Ukrainka’s verses are dear to poetry- lovers throughout the world. Ukraine has also given the world many outstanding scientists. Such names as Vernandskyi, Zabolotnyi, Bogomolets, Sklifosovskyi, Paton, Filatov are well- known all over the world. Nowadays modern Ukrainian scientists achieved great successes in the field of mathematics, physics, biology and medicine.

Great contribution to the world’s historical science was made by such prominent Ukrainian historians as Mykola Hrushevskyi, Mykhailo Drago-manov, Dmytro Yavornitskyi, Mykola Kostomarov. The Ukrainian national composer school is connected with the name of Mykola Lysenko.

Вот чему их называют выдающимися. Имена Тараса Шевченко, Леси Украинки, Ивана Франко, Марка Вовчка и Григория Сковороды получили общее признание. Sport plays such an important part in British life that many idioms in the English language have come from the world of sport. For example, “to play the game” means “to be fair”, and “that’s not cricket” means “that’s not fair”. The most popular kind of sports in Britain is football. A lot of people support their local clubs at matches on Saturday afternoons or watch the matches live on television. Golf is Scotland’s chief contribution to British sport. English people love cricket. Cricket is played at schools, colleges, universities, in most towns and villages. Test matches with other countries are held regularly. Tennis is played by both men and women either in exclusive tennis clubs or on public tennis courts. People all over the world know Wimbledon as the centre of lawn tennis. The Wimbledon championship, in which the leading rackets of the world compete, is held annually in the southern suburb of London. Englishmen like racing. There are all kinds of racing in England: horse-racing, motor-car racing, boat-racing, dog-racing, donkey-racing. The most famous boat race in England is between Oxford and Cambridge.

Национальными британскими видами спорта есть: футбол, гольф, крикет, пинг-понг, большой теннис, метание проволочек (дартс), прыжки. Наиболее популярный вид спорта в Британии — футбол. Our school is not very big. It’s a modern three-storeyed building of a typical design. In front of the school there is a big sports ground, behind it there is a small garden with beautiful flower- beds. Here on the sports ground pupils have their lessons of physical training when the weather is fine. When you enter the school, you will see a large gymnasium and workshops on the left. On the right there is a canteen. The cloak-room is downstairs. The classrooms, the laboratories, the doctor’s room, the library, the teachers’ room are on the upper floors. On the walls of the corridors you can see portraits of famous scientists, writers and outstanding people of our country. There are light curtains on the windows and many flowers on the window-sills. The halls are full of sunlight. Entering a classroom you’ll find three rows of desks, a teacher’s table, a blackboard and a bookcase. You’ll also see different pictures, diagrams and wall newspapers.

Наша школа не очень большая. Это современный трехэтажный дом, построенный за типичным проектом. Перед школой большая спортплощадка, за ней маленький сад с красивыми клумбами. В красивую погоду на спортплощадке проводятся уроки физкультуры. Войдя в школу, вы увидите большой спортзал и мастерские по левую сторону. По правую сторону — столовая. Раздевалка внизу. Классы, лаборатории, кабинет врача, библиотека и учительская на верхних этажах. В коридорах на стенах можно видеть портреты знаменитых ученых, писателей, выдающихся деятелей нашей страны. На окнах светлые занавески, а на подоконниках много цветов. Холлы полные солнечного света. В каждом классе вы найдете три ряда парт, учительский стол, доску и книжный шкаф.

Вы также увидите разные рисунки, схемы и стенновки.

Our school is a modern two-storeyed building of a typical design. It is situated in the centre of the city in a picturesque street named after the great Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka. In front of our school there are round flower- beds, where pupils grow different flowers during their biology lessons. There are different specialized classrooms for the lessons of Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Biology. They have slide projectors; schemes and tables are on the walls. Chemistry and Physics classrooms have special laboratories well-equipped for different experiments and tests, which are made by our pupils during the lessons. The first floor of our school is occupied by English, French and German classrooms. There one can find different pictures, maps, diagrams and wall newspapers on the walls. On the second floor there is our gymnasium and assembly room, where we usually gather to celebrate different holidays. We decorate the assembly room with colourful balloons, slogans and our pictures. In the gymnasium we have our classes of physical training and also spend the breaks between the lessons playing volleyball or basketball. There are also classrooms for junior pupils in our school.

Наша школа — современный двухэтажный дом типичного проекта. Она расположена в центре города на живописной улице, названной в честь большой украинской поэтессы Леси Украинки. Перед школой находятся круглые клумбы, где ученики выращивают разные цветы во время уроков биологии. В школе есть разные специализированные классы для занять физикой, химией, географией и биологией. В них есть слайдопроектори, на стенах висят схемы и таблицы. В кабинетах химии и физики есть специальные лаборатории, хорошо оборудованные для разных экспериментов и тестов, что проводятся учениками во время уроков. На первом этаже нашей школы расположенные кабинеты английской, французского и немецкого языков. На стенах висят картины, карты, диаграммы и стенновки. На втором этаже — спортзал и актовый зал, где мы обычно собираемся, чтобы отметить разные праздники. Мы украшаем актовый зал цветными снопами, лозунгами и нашими рисунками. В спортзале проходят уроки физкультуры, и мы также проводим там перерыва, играя в волейбол и баскетбол. В нашей школе есть также начальные классы.

They are decorated with large pictures of nature, different things made by the youngest schoolchildren, large posters with alphabet and numbers and so on. Those rooms are the largest and most beautiful in our school. We also have aesthetics classroom where we have the lessons of drawing, music and Russian and Ukrainian literature. There one can see portraits of Ukrainian poets and writers, posters with the history of the development of Ukrainian costumes. The canteen and the cloak-room are on the ground floor. On the whole our school is very clean and light. There are white and pink curtains on the windows and many flowers on the window sills. The corridors are large and full of sunlight. There we can have some rest between our classes or just talk with each other. I like my school very much.

Я очень люблю свою школу.

What does the sentence “I am a citizen of Ukraine” mean? At first it is difficult to answer. Let’s take some examples. A doctor helps people to improve their health. A worker makes machines. A farmer grows plants. A teacher teaches pupils. A soldier defends our country. In short we can become builders, shopmen or pilots. But a citizen is not a profession. To be a citizen means to be responsible for one’s work, for the future of our country. People become doctors to help other people. They become farmers to give their country more bread. They become workers to make new machines needed by their country. They become teachers to give the youth knowledge necessary for their life. We know the names of the best veterans of labour and veterans of war in our country. We met with them and they told us about their work and life. But have we thought about what the members of our own families have done as Ukrainian citizens?

What are the results of their work? Why do people respect our grandfathers and grandmothers? These questions are very important. They are important because sometimes young people speak about leading workers, war heroes and veterans of labour, but we do not think about our own parents and grandparents. We do not think about what our fathers and mothers are for our country and our society. So grown-ups can tell us a lot about how our country developed.

It’s always interesting to begin something new. And if the beginning is good, the end may also be good. If we think of such a problem as “choosing a profession”, we must know everything about this or that profession. For example, I want to become a doctor. It means that at the age of ten or eleven I have to read books about doctors. Красивое начало оказывает содействие красивому окончанию Всегда интересно начать что-нибудь новое. И если начало красивое, то окончание может быть тоже красивым. Если мы возьмем такую проблему как выбор профессии, то мы должны знать все о той или другую профессию. Например, я хочу стать врачом. This may be done by going to the library and by reading widely; also by talking to adults who know much about this profession. I also need to think about how well I can do what I would like to do. Perhaps the best way to prepare for any job is to get a good education — to do well at school, and to learn all I can outside of school. Jobs change and new ones are constantly appearing. In some years now, there will be many more new jobs nobody knows anything about today. By reading and talking to people we’ll learn what great opportunities there will be for us. If a school leaver wants to get a higher education, the best way to it is through practical work. Most school leavers will work a few years at a factory or plant before entering the University. They will have time to think over their decision and they will have a good knowledge of life.

 Можно ходить в библиотеку и читать книги об этой профессии, а также разговаривать со взрослыми, которые много знают об этой профессии. Мне также нужно подумать, насколько хорошо я смогу делать то, что мне нравится. Возможно, наилучший способ готовиться к любой работе — получить красивое образование, для этого нужно хорошо учиться в школе и учиться потому, что есть вне школы. Профессии меняются и постоянно появляются новые. Через несколько лет будут новые профессии, о которых никто сейчас не знает. С помощью чтения и бесед с людьми вы сможете справиться об огромных возможностях, которые будут у вас. Если же выпускники хотят получить высшее образование, то наилучший путь к этому — через практику. Много выпускников перед вступлением в университет будут работать несколько лет. I think that one of the most difficult things is to plan one’s own future. But a person may suppose what he or she would like to do in the near future. I have not decided about my future profession yet. Life is quite difficult now, but I want to have an interesting job. I would like my work to be connected with different countries and people. I’d like to communicate with people at my work. I also hope to enter some higher educational establishment and gain more knowledge and more friends. My another dream is to learn to operate the computer. Perhaps I will attend some computer classes. I will also improve my command of English.

Я считаю, что строить планы на будущее очень сложно. Но человек может планировать, что он хотел бы делать в ближайшем будущем. Я еще ничего не решил относительно моей будущей профессии. Сейчас жизнь довольно сложная, но мне хочется заниматься интересной работой. Я также хочу, чтобы моя работа была связана с разными странами и людьми. Мне бы хотелось общаться с людьми по работе. I realize that the knowledge of languages is very important nowadays. I hope to spend more time with my family, especially with my grandparents. They are getting older, so they need more care and help now. And I hope I will have enough time for my favourite music and my old friends. I can’t imagine my future life without them.

Я понимаю, что знание языков очень важно в наше время. Я надеюсь проводить больше времени с семьей, особенно с дедушкой и бабушкой. Они стареют и имеют потребность в заботе и помощи. Но я надеюсь, у меня хватит времени на мою любимую музыку и старых друзей. Я не могу вообразить свою будущую жизнь без них.

Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life for millions of school leavers. Many roads are open before them: technical schools, colleges and universities. But it is not an easy thing to choose a profession out of more than 2,000 existing in the world. Some pupils follow the advice of their parents, others can’t decide even after leaving school. As for me I made my choice long ago. I want to become a teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature. My choice of this occupation didn’t come as a sudden flash. During all school years literature was my favourite subject. I have read a lot of books by Ukrainian and foreign writers. I understand that reading books helps people in self-education and in solving different life problems. My parents are also teachers and I know that teaching is a very specif ic and difficult job. Teachers do not only teach their subjects. They develop their pupils’ intellect, form their views and characters, their attitudes to life and to other people. It’s a great responsibility.

It’s not as easy as it may seem at first. But I think that love for children combined with the knowledge I’ll get at the University would be quite enough to succeed in my work.

 Окончание школы — начало независимой жизни для миллионов выпускников. Много дорог открыто перед ними: техникумы, коледжи, университеты. Но нелегко выбрать профессию с более чем 2000 существующих в мире. Некоторые следуют совету родителей, другие не могут решить даже после окончания школы. Я хочу стать учителем украинского языка и литературы. Мой выбор профессии не был случайным озарением. На протяжении всего обучение в школе литература была моим любимым предметом. Я прочитала много книг украинских и заграничных авторов. Я понимаю, что чтение книг помогает людям в самообразовании и решении разных жизненных вопросов. Мои родители тоже учителя, и я знаю, что работа учителя очень специфическая и разновески. Учителя не только излагают свои предметы. Они развива интеллект ученик, формирова их взгляд и характер, их отношени к жизн и друг люд. Это огромная ответственность. Это не так легко, как может сдаться сначала. Но мне кажется, что любовь к детям, соединенная со знаниями, полученными в университете, буде целиком достаточным условием, чтобы процветать в моей работе.

It is very important for us to make the right choice of profession. Many years ago I decided to enter the Foreign Languages Department of the University. English was my favourite subject at school. I did well in it. Our lessons were always interesting. Для нас очень важно сделать правильный выбор профессии. Много лет тому я решила вступить к университету на факультет иностранных языков. Английский язык был моим любимым предметом в школе. Я хорошо училась. Наши уроки всегда были интересными.

I also worked hard at my English on my own. I did a lot of exercises trying to improve my language skills. I read English books, newspapers and magazines. So I decided to enter the Foreign Languages Department. I wanted to know English perfectly. I want to work as a teacher at school. Today the teachers of English are of great demand in our country. I like this profession though I understand that it is a difficult job. To be a good teacher you must be interested in what you are doing. The profession of a teacher is very important. The teacher is a person who is always ready to help his pupils, who takes a real interest in his work.

Я также упорно работала самая над усовершенствованием своего знания английского языка. Я делала много упражнений, стараясь улучшить свои языковые привычки.

Я читала английские книги, газеты и журналы. Итак, я решила вступить на факультет иностранных языков. Я хотела знать английский язык совершенно. Я хочу работать учителем в школе. Сегодня в нашей стране учителя английского языка очень ценят. Я люблю эту профессию, хотя понимаю, что это трудная работа. Чтобы быть красивым учителем, нужно быть заинтересованным в том, что делаешь. Профессия учителя очень важная.
