Банкс Джозеф (1743-1820) — английский природовед. Участник первой экспедиции Дж. Кука (1768-1771). Вел дневник, в котором дал ее детальное описание. В 1788 г. возглавил Африканскую ассоциацию, которая была инициатором организации больших экспедиций по изучению внутренних районов Африки. Позднее эта ассоциация вошла в Королевское географическое общество Великобритании. Его именем названа группа островов в Тихом океане.
